About DanceSport Place

Erik and Melissa Cyr have been competing together for over 7 years, but each began their dance careers early on in life. Erik began his ballroom dance training at the age of 5 in his native Quebec, Canada. He first entered the competitive arena at nine years of age, and several years later was the North American Junior Champion in American Rhythm. After changing to the International Latin style as a young teen, his successful competitive amateur career included extended training in England and achievement as a finalist in all major North American competitions representing Canada. In 1997, Erik moved to the United States and turned professional.

Melissa began her dance training as a child in ballet and jazz. As a teenager, she moved to New York to pursue a career in ballet, but eventually became involved in ballroom. She had a successful early career in the American Rhythm style winning several Rising Stars before switching to the International Latin.

Soon after Erik and Melissa began their partnership, they enjoyed good results in both the United States and Canada, winning Rising Star titles in both countries, including U.S. Rising Star Latin Couple of the Year in 2001. They then chose to represent Canada and became Canadian National Open Latin finalists.

Having retired from professional competition, they are frequently invited to perform shows and exhibitions, in addition to their coaching and teaching work. Additionally, their focus is on preparing students of all levels from beginner through professional to compete, and their efforts have provided excellent results, with both Erik and Melissa’s students garnering scholarship titles in all levels, ages and styles. Their company, Dancesport Place, endeavors to provide ballroom dance education and information while sharing the joy and excitement of dancing to dancers at all levels. In supporting dancers to attain their goals, Erik and Melissa produced their first event in 2005, Soiree d’Etoile, which provided 10 amateur dancers with scholarships to help further their dancing. Through their teaching and website, Erik and Melissa hope to encourage people to become involved in ballroom dancing and enjoy the physical and mental benefits that come with it.
